Everything you need to know about reindeers of Santa
Merry Christmas to all. Today when my 6 years daughter was listening a song Rudolph the red nosed reindeer in her online classes, then she asked me mammaa Santa Claus has many reindeer in his vehicle why only one is mentioned in this song and whats name of others reindeer. Ever thought about it.
The child curiosity and as being believer in all religions, this question forced me think about getting the details. After some research i found some interesting answer. so thought about sharing with you all.
Santa originally had 8 reindeers named Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen and it was until 1939 that Rudolph came into the scene to make 9.
Reindeer | Personality trait | Skill |
---|---|---|
Dasher | He loves to go fast! | Sewing |
Dancer | Completely extroverted | All kinds of dance |
Prancer | A bit vain, though affectionate | Prancing |
Vixen | Slightly tricky | Magic |
Comet | Handsome and easy-going | Good with kids |
Cupid | Affectionate | Bringing people together |
Donner | Loud | Singing |
Blitzen | Fast as a bolt! | Can electrify others |
Rudolph | A little down on himself | Nose glows |
Now here goes another.
Are Santa’s Reindeer Female or Male?
Santa’s reindeer are typically portrayed as male in pop culture (Rudolph is referred to as a “him” in the song), but according to two professors at the University of Edinburgh, Santa’s reindeer are actually all female because male reindeer shed their antlers during the winter, while female reindeer retain their antlers, and Santa’s reindeer are always depicted with antlers. Male reindeer also lose nourishment and vitality during the winter months, so only the females are strong and healthy enough to pull a sleigh full of toys.
Now my further interest brought to interesting revelations for Santa Claus, also known as Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, Kris Kringle, or simply Santa, is a legendary character originating in Western Christian culture who is said to make lists of children throughout the world, categorizing them according to their behavior, and bringing gifts on Christmas Eve of toys and candy to well-behaved children, and coal to naughty children. He is said to accomplish this with the aid of Christmas elves, who make the toys in his workshop at the North Pole, and flying reindeer who pull his sleigh through the air.
The modern character of Santa Claus was based on traditions surrounding the historical Saint Nicholas (a fourth-century Greek bishop and gift-giver of Myra), the British figure of Father Christmas, and the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas (also based on Saint Nicholas). Like other gift-bearing figures of the season, Santa Claus also absorbed elements of the Germanic deity Odin, who was associated with the pagan midwinter event of Yule and led the Wild Hunt through the sky.
So every festival have marvelous characters and even more interesting stories behind them. And they gives us reasons to be joyous and share time with our dear ones. So let the winter and mood of festival over take you and enjoy the eve with loved ones. Again Merry Christmas to all.
